Do you know someone who has thought about SUICIDE or committed SUICIDE? Have you ever thought about SUICIDE?
SUICIDE means ending your own life. It is sometimes a way for people to escape pain or suffering. Some people wonder if a person is thinking about committing suicide, is it possible to change their mind and decide to live. Did you know that those at risk for suicide don't necessarily want to die, BUT they do want some help in reducing the pain they are experiencing so they can go on to lead a productive and fulfilling life. Often suicidal people are experiencing intolerable emotional pain, which they believe to be unrelenting. They often feel hopeless and trapped. By helping them to recognize and explore alternatives to dying, you are planting the seeds of hope that things can improve.
Have you ever wondered what the link between mental health and suicide? Research suggest that 70 to 90 percent of people who have made a lethal attempt, or died by suicide, were suffering from one or more unmanaged mental health issues, such as protracted depression, anxiety, bi-polarity, psychosis, and/or substance abuse. While the presence of an unmanaged mental illness is strongly associated with suicide, it is important to note that most people assessed with a mental illness are not at risk of suicide, and that few suicides are wholly the result of a mental illness.
Were you aware that suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the US, accounting for more than 1% of all deaths? It is the second leading cause of death among people ages 10-24. More lives are lost to suicide than any other single cause except heart disease and cancer. 44,000 Americans die by suicide each year. There are 13.8 deaths by suicide per 100,000 persons each year. There is one death by suicide for every 25 attempts.
