ANXIETY


Did you Know ANXIETY disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older or 18.1% of the population every year. ANXIETY disorders are highly treatable, yet only 36.9% of those suffering receive treatment.


ANXIETY in Teens is Rising! What Is Going On? According to the National Institute of Health, nearly 1in 3 of all adolescents ages 13 to 18 will experience an ANXIETY disorder. These numbers are rising steadily; between 2007 and 2012. ANXIETY disorder in children & teens went up 20%. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? There aren't any proven answers, but there are factors that could be contributing. In addition to genetics, brain chemistry, personality and life events, take the following into consideration:

Whatever the cause, this rise in ANXIETY is a REAL problem for our youth. Chronic anxiety can lead to serious mental health problems--Depression, Substance use and even Suicide. ANXIETY isn't PREJUDICE! ANXIETY disorders cut across all demographics--Suburban, Urban and Rural. They affect those who are college bound and those who are not.


Some of us aren't familiar with what it feels like to have to deal with ANXIETY. ANXIETY can make you feel worried or scared. ANXIETY can cause physical symptoms such as a fast heartbeat or sweating. It is a normal human response to be anxious in certain situations. A person may have an ANXIETY disorder if they feel anxious all or most of the time. Do you wander what triggers ANXIETY? A big event or a buildup of smaller stressful life situations may trigger excessive ANXIETY, for example, a death in the family, work stress or ongoing worry about finances. Personality, people with certain personality types are more prone to ANXIETY disorders than others are.



What to do, What To Do? Take one step at a time. If your child, husband, wife, relative or friend is dealing with ANXIETY start trying to recognizing the signs of excessive worry and understanding the best ways to support your loved one. Know when to seek help. If your loved one's ANXIETY starts to impede their ability to enjoy life, interact at school, work or hang out with friends, or if it causes problems at home, then it's time to seek professional help. Early treatment is ideal. The longer you let ANXIETY or any sort of mental or physical health condition go without intervention, the harder it can be to recover.
